Metamorphism is a process that changes the minerals or the microstructure of a rock, or both, essentially in the solid state, as the rock adjusts to physical conditions that differ from those under which it formed and from those normally found at the Earth’s surface and in the zone of diagenesis. It may coexist with partial melting and may change the chemical composition of the rock. The rock before metamorphism is its protolith.
