The modal composition of a rock is the proportion by volume of each of its minerals. The QAPF diagram names a coarse-grained igneous rock with less than of mafic minerals from four modal components recalculated to a sum of 100: quartz (Q), alkali feldspar (A), plagioclase (P) and the feldspathoids (F). Since quartz and feldspathoids do not crystallise together, every rock plots in one of two triangles, QAP or FAP, joined along their common side AP.
