A normal regression is a seaward move of the shoreline while the relative sea level rises: supply outpaces the accommodation made at the shoreline. A forced regression is a seaward move driven by a fall of relative sea level: the shoreline is pushed basinward whatever the supply, and the land left behind is exposed and eroded.
