什么是 North Atlantic Oscillation?

Definition 23.8 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · 第 23 章 — Climate Variability

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the leading mode of atmospheric variability over the North Atlantic: a see-saw of sea-level pressure between the Icelandic Low and the Azores High. Its index is positive when both are stronger than average, so that the pressure difference between them is large, and negative when both are weaker.

The winter (December–February) mean of the monthly NAO index of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, 1951–2026, in standard deviations, with its centred five-winter running mean. The lowest winter is 2010 (-1.67), the highest 2015 (+1.66).
