What is Ophiolite; Penrose ophiolite sequence?

Also known as: ophiolite · Penrose ophiolite sequence

Definition 13.2 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · Chapter 13 — Anatomy of a Mountain Belt: The Alps

An ophiolite is a distinctive assemblage of mafic to ultramafic rocks, a piece of oceanic lithosphere now found on land. The Penrose ophiolite sequence is the complete assemblage defined by a conference of geologists in 1972; from bottom to top:

  1. an ultramafic complex of harzburgite, lherzolite and dunite, usually with a deformation fabric acquired in the solid state;
  2. a gabbroic complex, ordinarily with cumulus textures;
  3. a mafic sheeted dyke complex;
  4. a mafic volcanic complex, commonly pillowed.
