Outgassing is the release, by volcanoes and through the ground, of the gases dissolved in magma. The primitive atmosphere is the Earth’s atmosphere before living things changed it: built mostly by outgassing, it held nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour, more carbon dioxide than today, and almost no free oxygen.
