What is Palaeolatitude; virtual geomagnetic pole?

Also known as: palaeolatitude · virtual geomagnetic pole

Definition 4.16 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · Chapter 4 — Geomagnetism and Palaeomagnetism

The palaeolatitude of a site is the latitude λ\lambda given by its mean inclination through the dipole formula, tan⁡I=2tan⁡λ\tan I = 2\tan\lambda. The virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) of a direction (D,I)(D, I) observed at a site is the north pole of the geocentric dipole that would produce that direction there.

The spherical triangle of the virtual geomagnetic pole: geographic north pole N, site S, pole P. The angle at the site is the declination D; the angle at the pole N is the difference of longitudes .
The spherical triangle of the virtual geomagnetic pole: geographic north pole NN, site SS, pole PP. The angle at the site is the declination DD; the angle at the pole NN is the difference of longitudes β\beta.
