什么是 Planetesimal, planetary embryo?

又称: planetesimal · planetary embryo

Definition 2.6 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · 第 2 章 — Planet Formation and Meteorites

A planetesimal is a solid body of a protoplanetary disc large enough, from about a kilometre to a few hundred kilometres across, for its growth to be governed by gravity rather than by sticking. A planetary embryo is a body that has grown, by accreting planetesimals, large enough to dominate its own region of the disc and to sweep it clear of planetesimals.

From dust to planets in the region of the rocky planets (schematic, not to scale). Grains stick into aggregates; swarms of pebbles collapse into planetesimals; gravity makes some planetesimals run away into embryos, which end by merging into planets. Beyond the snow line the embryos grew larger and could capture gas. Sizes from Chiang and Youdin (2010) and Lugaro and others (2018).
