What is Relative, planetary and absolute vorticity?

Also known as: relative vorticity · planetary vorticity · absolute vorticity

Definition 20.1 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · Chapter 20 — Atmospheric Dynamics

For a horizontal velocity (u,v)(u, v), the relative vorticity is the vertical component of the curl of the velocity relative to the ground, ζ=∂v/∂x−∂u/∂y\zeta = \partial v/\partial x - \partial u/\partial y, positive for anticlockwise rotation seen from above. The planetary vorticity is the vertical component of the vorticity of the Earth’s rotation, 2Ωsin⁡φ=f2\Omega\sin\varphi = f. The absolute vorticity is their sum, ζ+f\zeta + f.
