The relief of a grain in thin section is how strongly its outline, cracks and surface stand out against the mounting medium; it is high when the refractive indices of the grain and of the medium differ much, low when they are close. The Becke line is the thin bright line that borders a grain whose index differs from that of its surroundings when the microscope is slightly out of focus.
