What is Rossby and Ekman numbers?

Also known as: Rossby number · Ekman number

Definition 19.5 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · Chapter 19 — Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

For a flow of speed UU, horizontal scale LL and depth HH on a planet of Coriolis parameter ff, the Rossby number is Ro=U/(fL)\mathrm{Ro} = U/(fL), the ratio of the acceleration, of order U2/LU^2/L, to the Coriolis force, of order fUfU. The Ekman number is Ek=ν/(fH2)\mathrm{Ek} = \nu/(fH^2), the ratio of the viscous force, of order νU/H2\nu U/H^2, to the Coriolis force; in a turbulent flow ν\nu is replaced by an eddy viscosity.
