The salinity of sea water is the mass of salts dissolved in a kilogram of sea water. On average it is about $35\,\mathrm{g}$ per kilogram: $3.5\,\%$ of the mass of sea water is salt.

What changes the salinity of the sea: evaporation and freezing leave the salts behind; rain and rivers add fresh water.
