A sedimentary facies is a body of sedimentary rock distinguished from others by its lithology, grain size, sedimentary structures and fossils, all of which reflect the conditions under which it was formed. The depositional environment is the place, with its physical, chemical and biological conditions, in which a sediment is laid down: a river channel, a floodplain, a beach, the slope of a delta, the deep sea floor.
