Shallow-ice approximation কী?

The shallow-ice approximation treats an ice sheet whose thickness is small against its width as locally a parallel-sided slab: at each place the ice deforms by simple shear under the driving stress $\tau_d = \rho gH|\nabla s|$, $s$ being the surface elevation, and the flux follows the slab formula with the local thickness and surface slope.
