A standard candle is a class of objects whose absolute magnitude is known, or can be inferred from a property measured independently of distance, so that its apparent magnitude gives its distance modulus. The distance ladder is the chain of methods, each calibrated on objects close enough to be measured also by the method before it, that carries distances from parallaxes out to the expanding Universe.
