A submarine fan is a cone of sediment at the foot of a continental slope, fed by a canyon: an upper fan with a main channel between levées, a middle fan of distributary channels ending in sand lobes, and a lower fan of thin turbidites passing into basin-floor mud.

(a) The Bouma sequence of a complete turbidite bed, drawn as a grain-size log (width means coarser), with its five divisions. (b) A submarine fan in plan: a canyon feeds a channel between levées, which splits into distributary channels ending in sand lobes; thin turbidites spread over the lower fan.
