什么是 Taphonomy; preservation potential?

又称: taphonomy · preservation potential

Definition 20.1 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · 第 20 章 — Fossils and Palaeoenvironments

Taphonomy is the study of what happens to the remains of an organism from its death to its discovery as a fossil: decay, scavenging, transport, burial, and the chemical changes of diagenesis. The preservation potential of an organism, or of one of its parts, is the probability that it passes through these stages and survives in the rock.

The taphonomic path from a living community to a collection, with what each stage removes or changes. Burial is the turning point: before it the remains are exposed to every loss; after it, only diagenesis and erosion act on them.
