又称: terrane · microcontinent

Definition 15.2 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · 第 15 章 — Ancient Massifs and the Wilson Cycle

A terrane is a fault-bounded block of crust whose geological history differs from that of its neighbours, brought to its present position by plate motion; it may be an island arc, an oceanic plateau, a slice of ocean floor or a fragment of continent. A microcontinent is a block of continental crust, smaller than a continent, separated from the continents by oceanic crust.

Three moments of the closure of the Iapetus and Rheic oceans, as a schematic sketch with no map projection and no scale: positions, sizes and shapes are only topological. A: Avalonia has left Gondwana and the Rheic Ocean opens behind it. B: Iapetus has closed; Laurentia, Baltica and Avalonia form Laurussia, along Caledonian sutures (red lines); smaller blocks are crossing the Rheic Ocean. C: Gondwana has met Laurussia along the Variscan–Appalachian belt (hatched).
