Thermal convection is the transport of heat by the motion of the material itself: warmer, lighter material rises, colder, denser material sinks, as in a convection cell. Mantle convection is the thermal convection of the Earth’s solid mantle, which creeps at a few centimetres a year and carries the heat of the interior towards the surface.

Mantle convection (schematic, not to scale). The plates are its cold upper boundary: hot mantle rises beneath ridges, the plates cool as they move away and sink back as slabs at the trenches, some of them into the lower mantle. Plumes may rise from deep down beneath hotspots.
