Thermochronology is the use of radiometric cooling ages to date the time at which a rock passed through a given temperature, and so to reconstruct its thermal history. A thermochronometer is a pair of a mineral and a dating method with its closure temperature: for instance apatite with the (U–Th)/He method, or zircon with fission tracks.
