What is Thin-skinned and thick-skinned tectonics?

Also known as: thin-skinned tectonics · thick-skinned tectonics

Definition 13.7 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · Chapter 13 — Anatomy of a Mountain Belt: The Alps

Thin-skinned tectonics is deformation of a sedimentary cover detached from its basement along a basal décollement: the cover folds and thrusts while the basement beneath stays undeformed. Thick-skinned tectonics is deformation in which the basement is involved, cover and basement shortening together on faults that cut down into the basement.
