The total alkali–silica diagram (TAS diagram) names a volcanic rock whose mode cannot be measured from its mass percentages of $\ce{Na2O + K2O}$ against $\ce{SiO2}$ , after the analysis has been recalculated to $100\,\%$ free of water and carbon dioxide. It is divided into fifteen fields by straight lines whose intersections have fixed coordinates (the figure after the next paragraph).

The TAS diagram (after Le Bas and others, 1986, as given by the British Geological Survey) with 456 lavas and intrusive rocks from Iceland (blue) and 580 from the Cascades (red), oxides as analysed. Pc picrobasalt, B basalt, O1 basaltic andesite, O2 andesite, O3 dacite, R rhyolite; S1 trachybasalt, S2 basaltic trachyandesite, S3 trachyandesite, T trachyte or trachydacite; U1 tephrite or basanite, U2 phonotephrite, U3 tephriphonolite, Ph phonolite, F foidite.
