What is Unconventional reservoir?

Definition 30.7 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · Chapter 30 — Energy Geology

An unconventional reservoir is a rock of such low permeability that the oil or gas held in its microscopic pores cannot flow to a well at an economic rate without artificial stimulation; it is produced through wells drilled horizontally along it and fractured hydraulically. Shale oil and shale gas are held in the source rock itself, tight gas in low-permeability sandstones and carbonates.
