What is Vitrinite reflectance, time–temperature index?

Also known as: vitrinite reflectance · time--temperature index

Definition 30.3 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · Chapter 30 — Energy Geology

Vitrinite reflectance, RoR_o, is the percentage of incident light reflected by polished grains of vitrinite, an organic component of coal and of kerogen, measured under a microscope; it rises irreversibly with heating and records the highest thermal maturity a rock has reached. The time–temperature index (TTI) of Lopatin is the sum ∑nΔtn 2n\sum_n \Delta t_n\,2^n over the intervals of 10 ∘C10\,{}^{\circ}\mathrm{C} that a rock has passed through, Δtn\Delta t_n being the time in millions of years spent in the interval numbered nn, with n=0n = 0 for 100 to 110 ∘C110\,{}^{\circ}\mathrm{C}, n=1n = 1 for 110 to 120 ∘C120\,{}^{\circ}\mathrm{C}, n=−1n = -1 for 90 to 100 ∘C100\,{}^{\circ}\mathrm{C}, and so on.

Top: burial history of an invented basin (black: horizons deposited every 10 million years, the thick one the source rock), isotherms (dashed), and the depths where Easy%Ro reaches 0.6\,\% (blue) and 1.3\,\% (red). Bottom: its events chart; generation runs from R_o = 0.6\,\% to 1.3\,\% in the source rock, after the trap formed.
