The water–rock ratio $W/R$ of a hydrothermal system is the mass of water that has exchanged with a mass of rock, divided by that mass of rock.

The box model of a hydrothermal system. In a closed system one batch of water stays with the rock until both are in equilibrium; in an open system water flows through, and the rock moves toward the water a little with every parcel.
