Below a certain depth, all the pores of the rock are full of water. The water table is the top of this water-filled zone. Above it, the pores hold air and a little water; below it, they are full of water.

Where the Earth’s fresh water is. The bars for the lakes and for everything else (rivers, the air, the soil, swamps, living things) are too short to see.
