什么是 Zijderveld diagram; characteristic remanent magnetisation?

又称: Zijderveld diagram · characteristic remanent magnetisation

Definition 4.12 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · 第 4 章 — Geomagnetism and Palaeomagnetism

A Zijderveld diagram plots the end points of the remaining remanence vector after each step of demagnetisation on two planes at once, the horizontal (north against east) and a vertical one (north against down), with a common north axis. A component removed alone over a range of steps plots as a straight segment; a segment ending at the origin is the characteristic remanent magnetisation (ChRM), the most stable component, interpreted as the primary one when tests allow.

(a) Thermal demagnetisation of a synthetic specimen, from 20\, C to 580\, C: filled dots, the horizontal projection; open dots, the vertical one. (b) The six ChRM directions of site A of the weekend problem (dots), their mean (star) and its 95-per-cent cone of confidence (circle).
