What is Ellipse?

An ellipse is the set of points whose distances to two fixed points, the foci, have a constant sum; half its longest diameter is the semi-major axis $a$, and a circle is the case where the foci merge. A planet’s orbit points nearest and farthest from the Sun are its perihelion and aphelion.
