What is The electron-volt?

The electron-volt is the kinetic energy gained by an elementary charge crossing one volt: $1\,\mathrm{eV} = 1.60 \times 10^{-19}\,\mathrm{J}$. Chemistry lives at a few eV, X-ray tubes at tens of keV, nuclear physics at MeV, particle physics at GeV and TeV.
