La biréfringence d’un minéral est la différence $\delta = n_{\max} - n_{\min}$ entre son plus grand et son plus petit indice de réfraction principal : $n_\varepsilon - n_\omega$ en valeur absolue pour un minéral uniaxe, $n_\gamma - n_\alpha$ pour un minéral biaxe. Dans un grain coupé selon toute autre direction, la différence $|n_1 - n_2|$ est comprise entre 0 (une section perpendiculaire à un axe optique) et $\delta$ (une section contenant les directions de $n_{\max}$ et de $n_{\min}$ ).
