What is Chalcogens?

The chalcogens are the elements of group 16 (O, S, Se, Te, Po), with six valence electrons ns$^2$np$^4$. They form compounds with oxidation numbers from $-$II (oxides, sulfides) to $+$VI (sulfates), the higher ones only for sulfur and below.
