What is Insertion and β-hydride elimination?

Also known as: migratory insertion · beta-hydride elimination

Definition 20.7 University Chemistry — Year 2 · Chapter 20 — Organometallic Catalysis: Elementary Steps and Cycles

In a migratory insertion, an unsaturated ligand (alkene, CO\ce{CO}) bound to the metal inserts into a cis M–H or M–C bond: M−H\ce{M-H} and an alkene give an alkyl M−CHX2−CHX2−H\ce{M-CH2-CH2-H}; M−R\ce{M-R} and CO\ce{CO} give an acyl M−C(=O)R\ce{M-C(=O)R}. A β\beta-hydride elimination is the reverse of an alkene insertion: a hydrogen on the carbon β\beta to the metal moves onto the metal, releasing an alkene.
