An accretionary prism is a wedge of sediments, with slices of oceanic crust, scraped off the sinking plate and added to the front of the overriding plate at a trench. Tectonic erosion is the removal of rock from the overriding plate by the sinking plate, which carries it down: from the front of the overriding plate, or from the base of its crust.
