What is Bed shear stress, shear velocity?

Also known as: bed shear stress

Definition 20.7 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · Chapter 20 — Erosion and Transport

The bed shear stress τb\tau_b of a flow is the force per unit area that it exerts on its bed, parallel to the bed, in the direction of the flow. The shear velocity is u∗=τb/ρu_* = \sqrt{\tau_b/\rho}, a velocity that measures the same stress.
