什么是 Birefringence (of a mineral)?

Definition 8.3 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · 第 8 章 — Optical Mineralogy

The birefringence of a mineral is the difference δ=nmax⁡−nmin⁡\delta = n_{\max} - n_{\min} between its largest and its smallest principal refractive indices: nε−nωn_\varepsilon - n_\omega in absolute value for a uniaxial mineral, nγ−nαn_\gamma - n_\alpha for a biaxial one. In a grain cut in any other direction, the difference ∣n1−n2∣|n_1 - n_2| lies between 0 (a section perpendicular to an optic axis) and δ\delta (a section containing the directions of nmax⁡n_{\max} and nmin⁡n_{\min}).
