A CI chondrite is a member of the group of carbonaceous chondrites named after the Ivuna meteorite: black, crumbly stones made almost entirely of fine-grained matrix, rich in water-bearing minerals and carbon, almost without chondrules. Apart from hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and the noble gases, their composition is the closest of all known materials to that of the Sun’s photosphere; they are the reference composition of geochemistry.
