什么是 Continental collision?

Definition 20.1 High School Earth and Space Sciences · 第 20 章 — Building Mountains

A continental collision is the meeting of two continents at a convergent plate boundary, once the oceanic lithosphere between them has been subducted. Neither continent sinks: the crust between them is deformed and thickened into a mountain belt.

From subduction to collision (not to scale). 1: an ocean closes as its floor sinks at a trench. 2: the continent arrives at the trench and cannot sink; slices of ocean floor are pushed onto its edge. 3: the crust between the two continents is shortened and thickened into a mountain belt standing over a root; the line where the two continents are joined, marked by slices of ocean floor, is the suture; the slab breaks off and sinks.
