又称: effusive eruption · explosive eruption · magma fragmentation

Definition 6.1 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · 第 6 章 — Volcanic Eruptions

An effusive eruption is dominated by the outpouring of lava, which flows away from the vent as a coherent liquid. An explosive eruption produces mainly fragments, ash, pumice and ballistic debris, carried by expanding gas. Magma fragmentation is the break-up of a continuous melt containing bubbles into a continuous gas carrying drops and fragments of melt; it turns an effusive flow into an explosive one.

Volume fraction of exsolved water vapour against pressure in closed-system degassing (), with the solubility laws of . Pressure falls to the left, as the magma rises; the dotted line marks the gas fraction at which a published conduit model fragments the magma.
