什么是 Ekman depth; Ekman pumping?

又称: Ekman depth · Ekman pumping

Definition 21.2 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · 第 21 章 — Ocean Dynamics

The Ekman depth is DE=πδ=π2Az/fD_E = \pi\delta = \pi\sqrt{2A_z/f}, the depth at which the current of the Ekman spiral flows opposite to the surface current; it measures the thickness of the Ekman layer. Ekman pumping is the vertical velocity wEw_E at the base of the Ekman layer forced by the convergence or divergence of the Ekman transport: downward where the transports converge, upward, sometimes called Ekman suction, where they diverge.

A north–south section through a subtropical gyre of the Northern Hemisphere, east into the page. The Ekman transports under the trades and the westerlies converge, the water is pumped down, and the columns beneath, squashed, move towards the equator, where f is smaller, to keep their potential vorticity.
