Finite strain analysis is the measurement of the strain ellipse, or ellipsoid, that a rock has undergone, from the shapes, orientations or spacings of objects whose state before the deformation is known. In the Fry method, the vector from the centre of every object to the centre of every other is plotted from one common origin; when the centres were spread with a minimum spacing and no preferred direction, the empty region around the origin is an ellipse of the shape and orientation of the strain ellipse.
