什么是 Gyre; subtropical and subpolar gyres?

又称: gyre · subtropical gyre · subpolar gyre

Definition 29.2 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · 第 29 章 — The Circulation of the Ocean

A gyre is a large system of rotating ocean currents filling an ocean basin. A subtropical gyre lies between the trade winds and the westerlies and turns clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and anticlockwise in the Southern. A subpolar gyre lies on the poleward side of the westerlies and turns the other way.

The gyres of the surface ocean (schematic arrows on a map of the land). Dark red: the five subtropical gyres, clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and anticlockwise in the Southern, each with a narrow western boundary current; blue: the subpolar gyre of the North Atlantic; green: the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Named are only the currents discussed in the text. The arrows show the sense of the flow, not its speed.
