The hydrolysis of a silicate is its reaction with water and hydrogen ions in which the hydrogen ions replace the metal cations, which go into solution, part or all of the silicon leaves as dissolved silicic acid , and the rest of the mineral is rebuilt into a new solid, a clay mineral or a hydroxide. The dissolution is incongruent: the solid left does not have the composition of the mineral attacked.
