Definition 11.7 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · 第 11 章 — Isostasy and Gravity Anomalies

The hypsometric curve of a planet gives, for each fraction ff of its surface, the elevation z(f)z(f) exceeded by exactly that fraction. It is the cumulative distribution of elevation, read from the top.

The Earth’s hypsometric curve, from the ETOPO1 global relief model at one degree, each cell weighted by its area (over Antarctica and Greenland, the top of the ice). The two nearly flat stretches of the curve are the continental platforms near sea level and the deep ocean floor.
