What is Isotropic and anisotropic minerals?

Also known as: isotropic mineral · anisotropic mineral

Definition 8.1 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · Chapter 8 — Optical Mineralogy

A mineral is an isotropic mineral when its refractive index is the same for every direction of propagation and of vibration of light; cubic minerals (garnet, halite, spinel) and glasses are isotropic. It is an anisotropic mineral when its refractive index depends on the vibration direction; all minerals of the other crystal systems are anisotropic.
