Marine magnetic anomaly; polarity chron; polarity timescale কী?

অন্য নাম: marine magnetic anomaly · polarity chron · geomagnetic polarity timescale

Definition 12.14 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · অধ্যায় 12 — Plate Kinematics on a Sphere

A marine magnetic anomaly is the difference between the intensity of the magnetic field measured at sea and the intensity of a reference model of the Earth’s main field at the same place: it is positive above crust magnetized in the direction of the present field, and negative above crust magnetized in the opposite direction. A polarity chron is an interval of time during which the field kept one polarity, named by a number and the letter n (normal, as today) or r (reversed). The geomagnetic polarity timescale is the sequence of polarity chrons with the ages of their boundaries.

(a) The geomagnetic polarity timescale over the last 11\, Myr (black: normal polarity, as today; white: reversed), with the ages of the 2004 timescale, short subchrons included. (b) and (c) The ocean floor that a ridge (red) builds during the same time, spreading symmetrically: every polarity interval becomes a pair of stripes, one on each flank, of width equal to the half spreading rate times its duration. At four times the rate, the same pattern is four times wider; short events such as the Jaramillo (near 1\, Ma) make stripes less than a kilometre wide on the slow ridge.
