Obduction is the emplacement of a slab of oceanic lithosphere onto a continental margin, the ophiolite riding over the continent. Continental subduction is the descent of continental lithosphere, pulled by the oceanic slab attached to it, into a subduction zone after the ocean in front of it has been consumed.
