什么是 Reference Earth model?

Definition 11.13 High School Earth and Space Sciences · 第 11 章 — Seismic Waves Reveal the Interior

A reference Earth model is a table of the speed of P waves, the speed of S waves and the density against depth, the same in every direction, chosen to agree with the observed travel times of seismic waves and with the mass of the Earth.

The speeds of P and S waves and the density against depth in the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (Dziewonski and Anderson, 1981). The dotted lines mark the main discontinuities below the Moho, which is too shallow to show at this scale.

Definition 9.6 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · 第 9 章 — The Layered Earth

A reference Earth model is a spherically symmetric Earth, given as the seismic speeds vP(r)v_P(r), vS(r)v_S(r), the density ρ(r)\rho(r) and, in the fullest models, the attenuation as functions of the radius rr alone, that fits the observed travel times, free-oscillation periods, the Earth’s mass and its moment of inertia. The most widely used is PREM, the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (1981).
