A refractory element is one whose 50 per cent condensation temperature (Chapter 2) lies above those of magnesium, silicon and iron, $1310\text{ to }1340\,\mathrm{K}$ at $10^{-4}\,\mathrm{bar}$ ; a volatile element is one whose condensation temperature lies below them.
