什么是 Return period?

Definition 8.7 High School Earth and Space Sciences · 第 8 章 — Drainage Basins, Rivers and Floods

The return period TT of a flood is the average interval, in years, between years whose annual peak equals or exceeds it. A flood of return period TT, a TT-year flood, has a probability 1/T1/T of being equalled or exceeded in any one year.

The 95 annual peaks of the Potomac River near Washington, ranked and plotted against their return periods T = (n+1)/m. The largest, in March 1936, gets T = 96 years. Data: U.S. Geological Survey, station 01646500.
The 9595 annual peaks of the Potomac River near Washington, ranked and plotted against their return periods T=(n+1)/mT = (n+1)/m. The largest, in March 1936, gets T=96T = 96 years. Data: U.S. Geological Survey, station 01646500.

Definition 28.2 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · 第 28 章 — Geological Hazards and Risk

Let events of a given kind — a flood above a discharge, a ground motion above a level, an earthquake above a magnitude — occur at a mean annual rate λ\lambda. Their return period is T=1/λT = 1/\lambda: the mean interval between two of them, and the inverse of their annual rate, not a timetable.
