什么是 Solid solution, end-member?

又称: solid solution (mineral) · end-member

Definition 7.6 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · 第 7 章 — Rock-Forming Minerals

A solid solution is a mineral in which one or more structural sites are occupied, in proportions that vary continuously, by two or more ions. The end-members of a solid solution are the compositions at its limits, each with every varying site filled by one ion only; an intermediate composition is given by the mole fractions of the end-members.

The coupled substitution in plagioclase. Replacing a sodium by a calcium in the large site adds one positive charge; replacing a silicon by an aluminium in a tetrahedron removes one. Every intermediate plagioclase Na_1-x Ca_x Al_1+x Si_3-x O_8 is neutral.

The olivine solid solution as an ideal mixture of forsterite and fayalite, from their measured densities. Left: the molar volume, linear in the composition. Right: the density (solid), slightly above the straight line between the end-members (dashed).
